Meet Dr. O’Connor

Forty years to the day from the creation of the Malibu Eye Center Optometry, therapeutic optometrist Gregory Michael O’Connor, O.D. introduced his second location serving Malibu and its surrounding communities on September 1, 2020 – Malibu In Sight Optometry.

Nestled in the new green-inspired Malibu Park at Cross Creek, adjacent to Blue Bottle Coffee, the new millennial driven location is the light, airy answer to approachable eyecare. The interiors are a peaceful mix of Calcutta Macchiata marble reception, travertine and polished concrete flooring, with controlled high-tech lighting and leather seating to maximize the stunning view of Malibu’s rolling hills and chaparral.

To serve as broad a patient population as possible, Dr. O’Connor has instituted three of the latest refraction systems, from the VX-40 analyzer to the VX120+ complete with dry eye assessment to the Eye Refract from Luneau Technologies – the only binocular refraction system where both eyes work open and comfortably together to determine an accurate prescription in 10 minutes or less. Malibu In Sight also offers the Optos Daytona Plus by Nikon, the latest in ultra-high-resolution imaging with autofluorescence capabilities and an exposure time of 0.4 seconds.

In his second year at Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. O’Connor was awarded the Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship, and upon graduation, he attended medical officer orientation at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. His subsequent assignment was Director of Eye Services, Naval Regional Medical Center, Camp Pendleton-Barstow Clinic. Upon honorable discharge with a letter of commendation, he started the now legendary Malibu Eye Center Optometry on September 1, 1980.

The frame offerings are a compelling selection of brands that appeal to both the young and the young-at-heart, curated on a piece-by-piece basis by 20-year eyewear veteran, Salvatore Sampino. Berluti, Rimowa, Balenciaga, Margiela, and artist collaborations with Bernhard Willhelm and Damir Doma are compelling in and of themselves. Mixed with Barton Pereira, Masunaga, and the John Varvatos Artisan collection, you can also find Thierry Lasry’s hip collaborations with fashion brands Rhude, Local Authority LA, Koche, and Enfants Riches Deprimes, and the trendy British influence of Paul Smith and Victoria Beckham. All of the eyewear emanates from the factories of Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Japan.

Mr. Sampino holds a Master of International Affairs degree in both International Media and Communications and International Security Policy from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He has been a fashion and lifestyle editor for Curtco Robb Media and its affiliates, as well as the curator and practice manager for the Malibu Eye Center since 2002. He is a strong supporter of the Vision Council, Reed Expositions, and the international salons of MIDO and SILMO.
